This New Year, Let Go of Fear

This New Year, Let Go of Fear This New Year, Let Go of Fear Any time we approach a new year, theres a lot of talk about setting new goals for our careers, our families, our fitness, or other personal pursuits. For me, its interesting to think about which goals will be achieved and which will be shelved. I often wonder Is successdriven primarily by theparticular goal, or by the person achieving it?My belief is that the achievers do, in fact, possess something that sets them apart from others. Its not an MBA, money, or good looks - although those dont hurt Rather, the characteristic that sets achievers apart is much cheaper and easier to come by Achievers, more so than others, are able to live their lives without fear. Its not that they have no concerns. Its not that failure never crosses their minds. Its that they are able to try new things without letting their fears stop them.Ive witnessed people who have never finished college land professional-level jobs faster than their degreed peers. They may have appeared less qualified on paper, but in reality, they had a lot to offer and were willing to put themselves out there. Im certain that in some of these situations, the fact that they had little to lose and everything to gain came into play.Isuspect the ability to let go of fear isnt a one-time occurrence. Its not something a person is able to do for just the most important things or ina moment when everything is on the line.Rather, the ability to let go of fear is a way of life, achievers haveturned living without fear into a habit they practice every day. When it does count, theyre ready.Thomas Edison is often quoted as saying, I havent failed. Ive just found 10,000 ways that wont work. Edison must have failed on an everyday grundon his way tocreating innovations that still influence the way we live today. Yet, in the face of all that failure, he still kept going. In 2004, I quit my corporate job and moved cross country for graduate school. Not only did I not know anyone in Los Angeles, but I paid for my own education and living expenses for the time I was there. Looking back, I often wonder how I was able to conquer that kind of fear and whether or not I could do it again today.I often ask myself, Whats the worst thing that could happen? If I cant come up with anything other than embarrassment or a little lost time, I try. Worst-case scenario, even when I fail, I learn something new. That new thing helps me to try again successfully or to set another goal - all without fear.I hope your new year is filled with new goals, new experiences, and a little learning along the wayA version of this article originally appeared on Copeland Coaching.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at Copeland Coaching.

Research finds were bad at guessing race over the phone

Research finds were schwimmbad at guessing race over the phoneResearch finds were bad at guessing race over the phoneIt is a sad fact of the workplace that often were judged long before we even enter the office. For instance, we already know that having an ethnic-sounding name can reduce the chances that your resume even makes it out of the slush pile. A phone screening is another time when ones ethnicity or race - perceived or otherwise - could put one at an unfair disadvantage. To add a wrinkle A new study finds that were pretty bad at guessing peoples identities correctly over the phone.Even when weve heard what someone sounds like on the phone over a significant period of time, were bad at guessing the race and ethnicity of the person on the other end of the line. Thats what a newPew Research Center telephone surveyfound when interviewers asked3,769 adults one final question on an unrelated survey If you had to guess, would you say I am white, black, Hispanic, Asian or some othe r race? This last question tripped up many of the respondents. The answers were mostly incorrect. Roughly half (49%) failed to identify the race or ethnicity of the interviewer correctly, while 40% guessed correctly. (Eleven percent of respondents refused to answer the question.)While seven in ten respondents were able to guess the identity of white interviewers, the participants had lower chances of correctly guessing the identities of non-white interviewers, even when the poll respondent shared the same identity as the interviewer. Respondents were able to correctly guess the identity of black interviewers half of the time, 43% of the time with Hispanic interviewers, and only 3% of the time with Asian interviewers.Studies The sound of your voice may determine if you get that callbackThe results of this survey are one more reminder that your gut instincts dont always lead to the right answer. This analysis could have wide-ranging implications for phone interviews, given that previous studies found we act differently depending on who we think is on the other end of the phone line.At best, the Pew Research Center cites the social desirability effect, a phenomena where we will bite our tongues and not express negatives views about someones race or ethnicity if the person were talking to is from that group. (That a phone interviewer might hesitate to express racist thoughts is somewhat cold comfort.)At worst, using auditory cues to make sweeping judgments becomes linguistic profiling, a term linguistics professor John Baugh has coined in his career of studying the harm these snap judgments cause. Throughout his research, Baugh has found that stakeholders who have the authority to give you that house or that job will block callers based only who they think you sound like, even if these actions break equal opportunity laws.In one experiment, Baugh got people with different ethnic dialects to answer a job ad. Even though the call recipients had no idea about any of th e callers job qualifications, only the job seekers using Standard English would be told that the job that was advertised was still available. Those who sound white get the appointment, Baugh concluded.Other stumbling blocksThese discriminatory snap judgments are not just limited to what you sound like. Your name can be the difference between you getting that networking boost or not.To test this, researchers sent out identical letters from prospective students to professors, where the only difference was in the names signed at the bottom. Fictional white male students like Brad Anderson got a response 87% of the time, compared to 62% of all fictional womenand minorities combined. In a separatestudy, online instructors who identified themselves as a female, regardless of their actual gender, would get rated lower by students in their evaluations than instructors who identified themselves as male. What to take awayWhat this research shows job seekers is that by the time you say hello, last ing judgments may have been made about your character and qualifications. For those in dienstgrad of hiring, its a stark reminder that unconscious biases lurk everywhere. You probably know far less about candidates than you think you do - until youve taken the time to truly evaluate people as complete individuals.

Being affiliated with an honor society appears good on a resume and could help you network when on the lookout for work. Although Latin honors are absolutely typical in america, very few different nations around the world use the system. The Debate Over Summa Cum Laude Resume Todays standards are a lot higher because to be able to receive Magna status, a student could only get a couple of Bs as semester grades above their entire four decades of college, and the remainder of the grades would have to be As. In this instance, GPA is an bestandteil in determining whether or not a student receives this honor at graduation, but that student doesnt necessarily must get a specific GPA so as to make that achievement. All honors students will wear the exact same cord, no matter their honors level. Recent students or recent college graduates will probably wish to place the education section to the top of the resume. The Summa Cum Laude Resume Game Seriously, all you have to do is take another look at the examples in the former section, and pick the format you find to your liking. Most importantly, be strategic about anything you place in your education section. Make your objective statement tell what you have to give. Just take a look at some of these suggestions. The Fight Against Summa Cum Laude Resume The proportional le ngth of each work description is important. It could also specify a sort of business (for instance, multinational, technical, etc.). The Appeal of Summa Cum Laude Resume The question of whether that distinction is going to be the difference between winning the job or not, however, is one which is perhaps too hard to generalize. Before you list someone for a reference, dont forget to call them to ask permission, make them know the kind of work youre pursuing and, if needed, refresh their memory about your work. Mr. Culps anfangsbuchstabe observations did not supply any change to such plans and theres speculation that there might be a change to the timeline of these problems. Also describe your position for a filmmaker. New Questions About Summa Cum Laude Resume It appears relevant to be aware that possessing a college degree isnt a requirement for becoming a member of the home of Representatives in the U.S. Congress. Generally, an honors thesis has to be supervised by a faculty member who has a comprehension of the subject you intend to research. So, nearly every college has a couple of varieties of honors that students may get Latin honors, English honors and Organization honors (be certain to have a look at which your learning institution offers). In different fields, academic honors might be less crucial to success. Theres no national standard for what is needed to qualify for these honors. Schools confer honors in a number of ways and there isnt any standardized set of criteria. The absolute most vital recognitions are conferred at graduation, but there are several interim awards too. Reporting an Underperforming Colleague Cloak and Dagger or Better For Business Et tu, Brute? A recent workplace poll by Monster Worldwide revealed that only 27 percent of workers would report a friend to the boss if they felt the teams performance was compromised by their friends performance. A more devious 4 percent of workers said they would tell their boss about theunderperformingcolleague if they thought it would help them get ahead, while an overwhelming 58 percent stated they would elend tell their boss about their friends poor performance, and if possible, would help them get their work done. Lastly, an apathetic 11 percent decided if the boss didnt notice, it wasnt their problem.Monster had 10,676 respondents polled worldwide. The question asked was as follows A colleague you are friends with has been seriously underperforming, would you report him or her? The data revealed the following s preadYes, if it will help me get ahead 4%Yes, if the teams success is on the line 27%No, if possible, Id help my friend with work 58%No, if the boss doesnt notice, its not my concern 11%Broken down geographically, U.S. workers come off a bit more ruthless then their European and Asian counterparts. Why Sending Just Your Resume Just Doesnt Cut It

Why Sending Just Your Resume Just Doesnt Cut ItWhy Sending Just Your Resume Just Doesnt Cut ItThe resume is your career heartbeat. However, alone, it may bedrngnis be enough to sustain your job search. Without the support of vital, story-pumping arteries, such as career documents and online profiles, the health of your job search may suffer. Two of those sustaining documents include the Executive Biography and the Executive Summary. What Is an Executive Biography? Why Do You Need One?1. What it is. Its an increasingly important tool in the executive or professional career arsenal. If you want to ensure the reader gets a complete picture of the value you offer, make sure you include this in your career story. The Executive Biography, or Bio if you like, is exactly what it seems to be. This additional, informative vehicle helps the prospective employer get to know you on a more personal level and gain insight on who you are as an individual. While a well-executed resume does a great job of showcasing your career accomplishments, business value, and unique ways of doing what you do, the Executive Biography tells the story from a more personal point of view.2. Why you need one. Using this document presents an opportunity to talk about philosophies that helped to shape your career. It is a highly personalized one- or two-page story full of information you may want to share, like where you grew up, books youve read, or volunteer organizations with which youve been involved- things you would like a prospective employer to know about you that may or may not be associated directly with the position youre seeking to fill.Written in a conversational tone, this biography focuses on those details that may not be at home on the professional resume, but that add value nonetheless. If you havent been asked yet, there is a very high likelihood that soon you will be asked for an Executive Bio, as more recruiters and hiring managers see the value in this important piece of the caree r-portfolio puzzle. What Is an Executive Summary? Why Do You Need One?1. What it is. Simply put, an Executive Summary is a trimmed-down version of your resume.2. Why you need one. Often, an interview-savvy and conversation-sparking resume is rich with meaty substantive stories that describe not only your achievements, but also the foundational detail that bolsters those achievements. These resumes provide headlines, summaries, and results additionally, they fuel the reader with the how, the why, the so what, and the overall context of the careerists story, which is essential in differentiating the candidate from the pack of resumes in the stack. This meaty resume often extends to two or three pages, and is the foundational job-search document you must include. However, in some instances, a second, trimmed resume document i.e., the Executive Summary, is a nice complement to the more robust version, equipping you with a communications piece suitable for specific situations. For example, a friend of a friend of a friend recommends that you schmelzglas an introduction to their friend for a possible opportunity. The loose connection to what may be a nebulous opportunity could require you to enlist an abbreviated resume, at least at first. And, once hooked into the contact more closely, you can send along your meatier storyboard resume. Other audiences for the Executive Summary include members at networking events and recruiters, among others. So, you see, your career and job search heartbeat is organic and complex, requiring multiple channels in which to achieve a healthy outcome. If you ignore the vital signs that keep your career ticking, you may very well end up seeking emergency resuscitation.Jacqui Barrett-Poindexter is a Glassdoor career and workplace expert, chief career writer and partner with CareerTrend, and is one of only 28 Master Resume Writers (MRW) globally. Hobbies Interests to Put on Your Resume [10+ Good Examples]

Hobbies Interests to Put on Your Resume [10+ Good Examples] Hobbies Interests to Put on Your Resume [10+ Good Examples] 10+ Hobbies and Interests to Put on Your Resume Your resume will certainly feature your education and work experience, but what else should you tell the hiring manager about yourself? Depending on the circumstances, including hobbies and interests on your resume can strengthen your application â€"  especially if you don’t have a lot of work experience. Yes, that’s right â€"  showcasing your passion for traveling, blogging, and even gaming on your resume can help you land your dream job. However, in some scenarios, having an interests section on your resume might be considered inappropriate â€" and may even ruin your chances at the role. Before you dedicate half of your resume to discussing your recent defeat of a video game, it’s important to understand: When to include interests and hobbies in your resume Good hobbies and interests to put on your resume (and bad ones) How to list hobbies and interests on your resume Before you compile a list of activities for your resume, you should understand the difference between hobbies and interests. 1. The Difference Between Hobbies and Interests Photography is a great hobby to add to your resume Hobbies Hobbies are activities you enjoy in your leisure time. For example, you’d consider “painting” a hobby if you like doing it for fun. Including hobbies on your resume is an opportunity to showcase skills you’ve developed outside of your education and traditional work experience. Interests Interests are topics that you find exciting and want to learn more about. For example, you might list “art” as an interest if you frequent art museums. Interests can be used to highlight a topic that you have in common with the company or role you’re applying for. It goes without saying that you’d cite your interest in world cuisine on your application for a position as a food critic. If done correctly, including a mixture of hobbies and interests on your resume will provide the hiring manager a well-rounded and memorable impression of who you are. 2. When to Include Hobbies and Interests On Your Resume If you have enough work experience to fill one page, don’t put hobbies and interests on your resume. Instead, use the space to elaborate on the professional skills you developed and your major accomplishments from those past jobs. Even if your application is lacking content, research the company you’re applying for to get a sense of the culture before including any interests or hobbies. If it appears that the company values individuality and work-life balance, it’s probably safe for you to put relevant examples in your resume. Alternatively, if you’re applying for a role in a “buttoned-up” industry, citing your passion for salsa dancing might be considered unprofessional. To help decide whether or not to include hobbies and interests on your resume, ask yourself if: Your hobbies and interests relate to the company and/or position Including a hobby allows you to showcase skills relevant to the role The organization prompts you to include this information Your education and work experience don’t fill a one-page resume You know the company values personalized applications If you’re lucky, you might even share a hobby or interest with the hiring manager. So, come to your interview prepared to discuss your love of golf alongside your professional strengths and weaknesses. 3. Good Hobbies and Interests to Put on Your Resume Once you’re confident that putting hobbies and interests into your resume will help your application rather than hinder it, the next step is to cherry-pick the right ones. Although you might have a robust list to choose from, it’s important to be strategic and intentional in your selection. Only list relevant activities on your resume that reflect positively on you as a candidate. Reference the job posting, and consider what skill or quality you intend to communicate with each of those listed activities. If you can’t think of one, it may be best to leave it off your application. 10 Examples of Good Interests and Hobbies to Put on a Resume Here’s an HR-approved list of activities for your resume â€"  and what each one tells the hiring manager about you. #1 Endurance Sports Engaging in an endurance sport such as cycling shows that youre dedicated, focused, and capable of working alone. Include endurance sports as a hobby on your resume, if you’re applying for a role that requires high-concentration tasks, e.g., data management, writing, or editing roles. #2 Team Sports Participation in a team-based sport demonstrates your leadership skills and teamwork abilities. Cite your involvement in a team sport if you’re applying for a people-centric role such as a marketing manager, team leader, or sales associate. #3 Art An interest in art tells the hiring manager that you’re creative and have a keen eye for detail. Art is a good interest to put on your resume if your desired role is in a creative or design-focused field, like UX/UI, cinematography, or art curation. #4 Volunteer Work Volunteer work is a great way to showcase your civic engagement, generosity, and time management skills. If you’re applying for a role at a not-for-profit organization or a company that values social responsibility, volunteer experience is a necessity. #5  Travel   If you’re a well-traveled individual, you’re likely open-minded, adventurous, and tolerant. Make sure to include travel as a hobby on your resume if you’re applying for a role that requires international travel, working in multicultural teams, or knowledge of different cultures. #6 Blogging / Video Production A blog or YouTube channel is a great way to show-off your creativity, organization, and technical skills. If you’re applying for an advertising or marketing role, link to this relevant hobby on your resume to display your personal brand. #7 Foreign Languages Cultivating foreign language skills conveys perseverance, initiative and of course, communication skills. It’ll benefit you to include them on your resume if the role you’re applying for involves international travel, multinational sales, or is in the tourism industry. #8 Gaming   Believe it or not, the video game you’re playing can be used to demonstrate your problem solving and remote collaboration abilities. If you’re applying for a role in the technology industry, citing gaming as a personal interest could enhance your application. #9 Music Playing or creating music requires discipline, innovation, and dedication. Add music as a hobby to your resume if you want to demonstrate your ability to be creative as well as diligent. #10 Club Membership A membership in a club or association shows hiring managers that you’re an active member in the community who enjoys socializing. List a club membership, like your fraternity or sorority, on your resume if you’re applying for a people-focused role such as a customer service representative or team lead. 3 Examples of Hobbies and Interests NOT to Include When considering which hobbies and interests to fit into your application, remember that discernment is key. It’s okay to enjoy skydiving and watching TV in your spare time; however, it might send the wrong signal to the hiring manager if the role is for a job at your local library. To avoid making a negative impression, consider how the hiring manager will interpret each personal interest on your resume. In general, don’t list activities on your resume if: Your hobby or interest hints at antisocial or alienated behavior Participation in the hobby may be considered dangerous or violent You know the hobby or interest conflicts with a company’s culture or values Your hobby or interest may be seen as inappropriate or discriminatory Listing a hobby or interest divulges personal information such as political or religious affiliations Here are a few hobbies and interests not to include on your resume â€" and what they signal to the hiring manager. 4. How to List Interests and Hobbies on a Resume Once you’ve got a shortlist of activities for your resume, it’s time to think about the best way to feature them. Never shoehorn your hobbies and interests into sections they don’t belong. Instead, naturally integrate them into your resume in one of the following ways. #1. Create a Resume Interests section Although your hobbies and interests may be compelling, in most circumstances they shouldn’t distract from your formal credentials. To avoid this, add your resume interests section to the bottom of the page â€"  after your education and work experience. Group your hobbies and interests together in one section, and add a title such as “Personal Interests” to separate it from the rest of your application. Include a brief one-line description that explains how each hobby or interest is relevant to the role. If possible, quantify each point by adding a number, percentage, or time. Make sure that you’re not repeating information that is already listed in other sections of your resume, such as Extracurricular Activities or Volunteer Experience. Here’s an example of a resume interests section, if you’re applying for a role as a Journalist. #2. Fit into Your Resume Objective The average hiring manager will only look at your application for 6 seconds. So if you’ve got a hobby or interest that is highly relevant to the job you’re applying for, add it to your resume objective. In case you don’t know, a career objective is a short blurb at the top of your resume meant to convince the hiring manager that your skills, knowledge, and abilities can help the company reach its goals. Therefore, if you have an impressive hobby or interest that could influence the success of your application, make sure to list it front and center. For example, if you’re applying for a role as a marathon coordinator, you’d want to draw the hiring manager’s attention to the fact that you’ve run 20+ marathons by including it in your career objective. Tips for Writing an Effective Direct Mail Letter

Tips for Writing an Effective Direct Mail Letter Tips for Writing an Effective Direct Mail Letter In direct response advertising, a great direct mail pack can work wonders for both the brand  and the bottom line. Truly successful direct mail is targeted, says something in a way thats both powerful and memorable, and talks directly to the customer. And theres no better way to engage in conversation than with a letter. Yes, a letter. If youre thinking that no one reads letters anymore, think again. The great Howard Gossage famously said People read what interests them. Sometimes, its an ad. He could also have said, sometimes its a letter. But, the humble direct mail pack does face tough competition from the myriad advertising messages people receive every single day. They are bombarded with emails, texts, telemarketers, banners, guerrilla ads, TV spots, radio ads, and so much more. Does anyone really have time to open a piece of direct mail, let alone read the letter? Its easy to think that in this day and age of smartphones, instant gratification, and multi-media everything, a humble direct mail letter is not glamorous, or fun. Better to send a jazzy brochure and some lame freebie. But to ignore the direct mail letter is to turn your back on one of the most tried and tested ways to engage a consumer and get a result. Its vital, and incredibly effect when written well. You just have to ensure that you give it a fighting chance by creating a direct mail pack that screams to be opened, and investigated. Do that, and the letter is the key to sales conversion. The Direct Mail Letter- Where Do You Begin? As mentioned in the previous paragraph, if you create a good direct mail pack, you will have already started the conversation on the envelope. The letter needs to pick up on that conversation and elaborate, in a way thats both engaging and persuasive. Its the salesman of the pack. Everything else is elaborate window dressing. Think of it this way. If Mad Mens Don Draper were part of a direct mail pack, he would not be the brochure or the box it came in. He wouldnt be the sample of the product, and he would not be a tacky freebie. Don Draper would be the letter. Hed sell the hell out of the product or service, using powerful words and a tone of voice thats aligned with the brand. Hed intrigue you, from the opening sentence to the final sign off or P.S. Hed engage you in a way that had you nodding your head, and thinking about ways to pay for this great new product or service. Hed seduce you. Then again, its easy to say all that. But in practice, when you are staring at a blank sheet of paper, it can be a scary task to fill it with the kind of language that will get the phone ringing or the website flooded with orders.   But the blank sheet of paper represents infinite possibilities. This is your chance to speak openly, and persuasively, to the consumer. The fact is, people read the letter first. Its a hard habit to break when someone sends you mail you want to know why, and the letter is the first place to look. So this blank sheet of paper is also the first point of contact with the brand. This is no time to show off, be clever, or pull a fast one. Its a conversation that can make or break the sale, and it needs respect. Dont be Tempted to Open With Crass Humor, Puns or Pushy Statements And dont write above or below your audience, either. You dont want to show your vast vocabulary, and you dont want to sound dumb. Speak as people speak, and never be afraid to break the rules of grammar. You are not writing a letter to win an English scholarship, you are writing to communicate. Want to use one-word sentences? Fine. Use the Golden Word- YOU People love hearing about themselves. The letter is the most intimate part of the conversation, so get up close and personal and tell them why this is important to them. Start talking about yourself too much and theyll switch off. Use YOU, and they are all ears. Tell them how this product or service directly improves the prospects life. You will mow the lawn in half the time, and without any stalls. You will make at least $100 by opening this account. You will see instant results, and you will have the best skin youve ever had. Its also important to open strongly. This differs depending on the audience and the product or service. If you are doing a piece of cold acquisition )meaning you have no former contact with the potential customer) you need to get them to quickly associate with a problem or situation. If its retention, or they have bought from you in the past, then build upon your relationship. But dont spend too long waxing lyrical about old times, get to the crux of the matter quickly. Dont Be Afraid to Write More Than One Page Someone recently said that good copy should be the same length as a skirt- long enough to cover it all, but short enough to be interesting. Well, thats good for print ads, but for direct mail you want it to be long enough to be persuasive. If you cant make your argument  in  one page, dont truncate it and hope the brochure picks up the slack. The letter always does the heavy lifting, the brochure is simply the showroom. Get them interested  in  the brochure, but get them to call (or visit the website) with the letter. Your Letter Should Build to a Call to Action From your opening gambit, build a case for the product or service that is watertight. Do it in steps, and slowly but surely create a flowing letter that guides the prospect to the  CTA.  Take inspiration from the infamous speech by Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross- AIDA. Get their attention in the opening line or two, build interest, get them to make a decision, and then make it easy for them to act on that decision.   AttentionInterestDecisionAction Make the Letter Pass the Quick-Scan Test It has been said that no matter what is written, consumers will scan it quickly, from top to tail, to pick out the pertinent information and see if it is worth their time. You do it yourself, and no doubt you scanned this article and skipped over certain parts. Your subheads, a  P.S., and the main headline will do this for you. If you cant grab them on a scan, they will likely not bother with the full letter. But make those relevant sections sing, and the prospect will read them all, or enough of them to get the idea and make the decision.   Tell Them What You Want Them to Do Ask for the sale, as bluntly as is necessary. This is not a billboard, and direct mail is not in the business of brand awareness. The pack and the letter have a job to do. The direct mail pack is about ROI. Get them to sign on the dotted line. If you have a phone number, ask them to call it. If theres a website, tell them to visit it. And feel free to use a sense of urgency, including limited-time offers.  They work. This is a brief insight into crafting a direct mail letter. For more advice on the subject, read the work of Steve Harrison. He is one of the best direct mail copywriters in the business. Examples of his work can be found in the latest edition of the  DAD Copy Book,  and in his excellent book  How To Do Better Creative Work.  If you can get hold of a copy, whatever the price, do so. Its one of the best books an advertising creative can own. Steve has also written a superb book solely on the art of writing copy, called How to Write Better Copy. Covering themes from blogs to billboards, and everything in between, it is highly affordable and well worth your time.

Study Motorcycles have same effect as light exercise and a cup of coffee

Study Motorcycles have same effect as light exercise and a cup of coffee Study Motorcycles have same effect as light exercise and a cup of coffee There’s nothing quite like the wide open road, am I right?Well actually, a recent study commissioned by Harley-Davidson suggests there are quite a few things that are similar to riding your motorcycle, and they may not be what you’d expect. For  a while now, motorcyclists have talked up the positives of their ride-or-die habit. But it’s been difficult to know how accurate their feelings were.“Until recently, the technology to rigorously measure the impact of activities like motorcycling on the brain didn’t exist,” Dr. Don Vaughn, a neuroscience postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the study’s research team leader, said in a press release. But now, that technology does exist, so Vaughn was able to conduct his study. His results indicate that  Ã¢€œriding increases attention by strengthening focus and heightening the brain’s passive monitoring of changes in the sensory environment while reducing the immediate stress response.”So what does that mean? English, please.Well, it appears that riding a motorcycle sharpens your alertness, much like “a cup of coffee,” according to the study. Sensory focus was also more acute for those on a motorcycle, compared to their colleagues in cars. But the news gets even better for riders. Those who opt for a motorcycle over a car experience an increase in catecholamines and heart rate like occurs during light exercise.Get out your leather jacket, because I’m not done yet: “Riding a motorcycle decreased hormonal biomarkers of stress by 28%,” according to a press release on the study.“The research findings Dr. Vaughn and his team identified helps explain what our riders have felt for the past 116 years - there’s a vitality and heightened sensory experience that comes from the freedom of riding a motorcycle,” Heather Malenshek, Harley-Davidson’s senior vice president of marketing brand, said in a press release. “We hope their findings inspire the next generation of r iders to experience these benefits along with us.”Get ready to rev your engines: It’s time to ride like your mental and physical health depend on it.

Apple CEO Tim Cook on why hes limiting his screen use

Apple CEO Tim Cook on why he’s limiting his screen use Apple CEO Tim Cook on why he’s limiting his screen use Apple’s CEO Tim Cook gave a candid interview to Ina Fried and Mike Allen on HBO’s  Axios  last night about the  negative consequences of using technology unchecked, and - notably - the CEO admitted to reducing his own screen use. When asked if technology was being used for evil, Cook said: “Technology is good or evil. .. depending upon the creator. Many times, it’s not that the creator set out to do evil,” he explained, “it’s that there wasn’t an anticipation of these negative things [it] could be used for. … Technology should amplify human performance and human experiences,” he told the duo. He also shared his thoughts on how he manages his own screen time, the way he de-stresses, and how Silicon Valley could do better by women. He’s creating healthier iPhone habits for himselfThe tech executive, who told Fried and Allen that he wakes up at 4:00 a.m. every morning to read user comments and assess what’s important to Apple’s users, admitted that his  Screen Time  stats were high. But he also emphasized that the time he spent with his screen was on the downswing. “If you look at my trends over time, my notifications are declining [and] the number of times that I pick up a device are declining.”  He attributes those positive declines to his increased awareness of how he’s been using his phone via Screen Time: “The only reason…is because we’ve built this functionality in our operating system and I now know what I was doing.”He responded to concerns about tech’s impact on well-beingIn response to whether or not Apple’s devices increase loneliness and detachment, Cook replied: “I don’t think the products themselves do, but I think our customers and users…are worried about the amount of time they are spending on their device or the distraction level of it. What we decided our role was is providing people the information and the controls that help them change their behavior,” he said.  Studies, in fact, demonstrate greater knowledge of a particular subject can inform better decisions and positive behavioral changes. He uses exercise to de-stressAfter he explores user feedback from 4:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., Cook exercises: “I go to the gym and work out for an hour because it keeps my stress at bay,” he said.Studies  have, in fact, demonstrated that not only does exercise reduce stress, it can alleviate symptoms of depression, improve cognitive function and  decrease risk of heart attack and stroke  by between 40 and 70 percent. He knows that improving the male-to-female ratio is key to Apple’s successCook said in the interview that he thinks Silicon Valley has done a good job of recruiting talent from all walks of life, but noted: “I agree 100 percent from a gender point of view that the Valley has missed it, and tech in general has missed it.” He assured the reporters that Apple is dedicating a lot of energy on how to balance the male-female ratio. “We are constantly asking ourselves: How can we improve more?” Cook said, also noting that he’s optimistic about the future of better gender representation in the tech force: “I’m actually encouraged at this point that there will be more marked improvement over time,” he emphasized. Apple and other tech companies stand to gain a lot by employing more women.  Several studies  indicate that companies with a larger pool of female employees and more women on their boards of directors outperform those with far fewer. This  article  first appeared on  Thrive Global.

How to Confront Your Boss (Nicely, Of Course) - The Muse

How to Confront Your Boss (Nicely, Of Course) - The Muse How to Confront Your Boss (Nicely, Of Course) So, you need to confront your boss. Are your palms getting sweaty at the thought? You aren’t alone. Needing to assert yourself to your manager- ideally, in a way that doesn’t make you come off like a pushy know-it-all- is a tricky thing. You already have the basics covered. You know you should double-check your facts, try to problem-solve yourself, and get your ducks in a row before you stick your neck out and potentially damage your relationship with your supervisor. But, you’ve already done all of that, and there’s no getting around this fact: You absolutely need to have that dreaded (and hopefully not heated) conversation with your boss. Now you’re met with the even tougher challenge of figuring out exactly what you should say. Fortunately, I’m here to help. Here are three common scenarios when you’ll need to stand your ground with your superior- as well as how to get that conversation rolling. Ah, that awkward moment when you know you’re right and that your boss is completely wrong. Perhaps your manager keeps citing an incorrect statistic or stubbornly maintains that his approach to a specific project is the best way to go. But, you? You firmly disagree. You’re completely confident that you’re in the right here. You’re eager to sway him over to your way of thinking (you know, the right way), without coming off as condescending or cocky. “I Thought That Same Thing, But…” One of the best ways to stick to your guns without majorly bruising your boss’ ego? By grouping yourself in with him. A phrase like this one demonstrates sympathy by making it clear that you had that same thought process, but eventually went another way when you uncovered an important piece of information- which you should share at this point in time. Even if it is a little white lie, it’s a great way to assert yourself in a way that’s still supportive and cooperative. “I Can Show You Where I’m Getting This Answer…” If you have facts on your side, there’s nothing wrong with opening your supervisor’s eyes to what is leading you to feel the way you do. When you’re standing firm that you have the right answer in this situation, walk your boss through exactly how you arrived at that conclusion. He’ll have a tough time arguing with solid proof. You have way to much work on your plate and are spread way too thin, meaning you need to loop your boss in on the fact that you’re feeling overworked so that she can hopefully help you reach a more realistic workload. But, you’re afraid that the whole exchange will just make you look like a complainer who can’t get anything done. Have no fear- that’s exactly why these two phrases are so helpful. “I’m Trying to Prioritize My Tasks…” You want to make it clear that you aren’t trying to shirk responsibilities altogether. Instead, you’re attempting to ensure that you have the necessary time and energy for the things that your supervisor views as priorities. A phrase like this one is great, as it can segue into a request for help to sort through your existing to-dos and zone in on the most important ones. It turns the conversation into a collaborative effort to order your workload, rather than a major complaining session. “Because [Project] Is Demanding So Much of My Time and Attention…” If you’re worried about presenting yourself like a good-for-nothing, lazy employee, it’s a smart strategy to direct your boss’ attention to something major that you’re working on. When there’s a larger project that’s demanding the majority of your resources, point that out to your manager so that you two can have a conversation about any less-pressing tasks that could be delegated or eliminated for now. You have a deadline looming over your head. The only problem? You’re stuck at a standstill while you wait on something that you need from your superior. Cringe, right? Needing to manage up can be a delicate situation to cope with. You need your boss to hold up his end of the deal. But, you also don’t want to seem like you’re telling him what to do. “I Know You Have a Lot on Your Plate…” One of the best methods for broaching this subject in a gentle way is to start by recognizing how busy your manager is. After you’ve acknowledged his packed schedule, you can ask when you can expect to receive that deliverable you’re waiting for. I know, it can make you feel like a bit of a brownnoser. But, if you’re concerned about coming off like a pesky micromanager, it’s a great way to segue into the conversation without pointing fingers and assigning blame. “Do You Think I’ll Still Be Able to Have This Project Completed By [Date]?” Because leaders are often juggling numerous different things at once, it’s easy for them to miss the forest for the trees. They don’t realize how their delay could impact the overall assignment. When your boss is really lagging behind, use a question like this one to remind her of the deadline for your entire project- rather than just her piece of the puzzle. Whether it was promised to a client by a specific date or you have other members in the organization waiting on its completion, nudging your boss with the firm deadline (rather than a wishy-washy end date of when you’d hoped she’d be finished) will hopefully give her a push in the right direction. Needing to confront your boss is usually enough to make your stomach do flips and your mouth go dry. But, chances are, you’re going to need to do it every now and then. Fortunately, there are a few phrases you can use to approach that conversation in a way that presents you as poised and put-together- rather than pushy and patronizing. When you find yourself in one of the above situations? Give these a try and prepare for a productive discussion (no tears, screaming, or shaky knees required).

The sun never sets on the Magic Circle

The sun never sets on the Magic Circle The sun never sets on the Magic Circle Vaults law firm rankings wont be released until later in the summer, but I dont think its giving too much away to say that those U.K. firms with a substantial U.S. presenceClifford Chance, Freshfields, Allen Overy, Linklaters, Lovellsarent exactly struggling. In fact, the ascension of the Magic Circle firms in terms of prestige has been one of the surveys most striking trends over the last few years. This trend is even more remarkable when one considers what a rocky start these firms had, particularly the largest of them all, Clifford Chance. First, there was Clifford Chances acrimonious union with Rogers Wells, followed swiftly bythe self-inflicted PR debacle known as the Memo Scandal. Back in 2002, in response to the firms perennial cellar-dweller status in the American Lawyers survey of associate satisfaction, the firm commissioned an associate-authored memorandum summarizing the associates gripes. To the surprise of no one, except perhaps Clifford Chance, the memo was leaked and rapidly made the rounds of New Yorks legal community. Most of the complaints catalogued in the memo were fairly typical for big time firms: partner favoritism and indifference, inadequate perks (no free shoeshines!), and insufficient training. The portion concerning billable hours, however, was a bombshell: some associates suggested that they felt pressure from partners to pad their hours. (Rumors of fraud = bad for business.)For the next couple of years, the memo scandal was, for many lawstudents and young associates, the salient fact about Clifford Chance-NYC. So kudos to the firm for climbing out of that hole. In the wake of the scandal, the firm took on morale issues head-on, going as far as installing a people partner to work on increasing retention. David Childs, the firms managing partner told The American Lawyer,Her sole role is to look after people. Theyve done something right: In the AmLaw 2007 midlevel satisfaction survey, the firm's New York office ranked10th out of 81. But of course providing a happy place for associates is hardly the point of a modern law firm. The Lawyer recently revealed some truly amazing statistics on the financial growth of UK law firms: Since the turn of the century, the average PEP of the UK's top 30 firms has grown by just under 93 (!) per cent. As The Lawyer puts it: The explosion in profitability has caused a seismic shift among the top firms with respect to their recruiting position stateside. John Christian, the personnel committee chair for Clifford Chance-US, positively crows: We receive resumes almost every day from lawyers who want to come here. Higher profits have certainly helped. But the lockstep culture and global reach are also important. I don't believe any US firm can match our global footprint and collaborative approach. -posted by brianAbove: agoogle image result for 'British Empire'

The Recreational Pilot Certificate

The Recreational Pilot Certificate The Recreational Pilot Certificate By far the least popular of all of the pilot certificates is the recreational pilot certificate. It was meant to be a simpler version of the private pilot certificate, but the restrictions placed upon it arent popular with students. The recreational license was meant for recreational flyers that were going to stay outside of controlled airports and within 50 miles of their home airport. For some farmers or enthusiasts who simply want to go for an airplane ride every now and again, the recreational pilot certificate might be desirable. The sport pilot certificate has sort of replaced the recreational pilot certificate, although the recreational license is still available to student pilots. The restrictions on a recreational pilot are greater than those imposed upon a sport pilot or private pilot. The requirements for obtaining a recreational pilot certificate lie somewhere in the middle of a sport pilot and private pilot license. Most people believe that if a student goes as far as a r ecreational certificate, he or she might as well gain the few extra hours of instruction for a private pilot certificate. Thus, the recreational license is not very popular.Nonetheless, if youve decided that there is still good reason for you to obtain a recreational pilot certificate, here are the steps to becoming a recreational pilot: 01 Meet the Requirements As with all certificates, youll want to make sure you meet the minimum requirements, as outlined in the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs). In this case, youll find the full requirements in CFR Part 61.96. In short, you must be at least 15 years old to begin training and 17 years old to take the FAA practical exam for the recreational pilot certificate. Also, you must be able to read, speak, write and understand English. 02 Obtain a Student Pilot Certificate and 3rd Class Medical You can get both at the medical examiners office when you go in for your aviation medical exam. The document that the doctor gives you should say Medical Certificate 3rd Class and Student Pilot Certificate, or something of that nature. You may choose to get a 1st or 2nd class certificate if you think youll want to become an airline pilot at any point; otherwise, a 3rd class medical certificate will do. 03 Find an Instructor Youll need to find an instructor if you havent already. If youre not sure where to go, ask around at your local airport. Most people know of instructors in the area and can refer you to a good one. Your relationship with your instructor is important, so spend some time finding a good one. If you end up with an instructor that you dont genuinely like, you reserve the right to find a new one. 04 Study for and Take the FAA Written Exam Start studying as soon as possible. Some flight schools or instructors will require you to successfully complete the FAA Recreational Pilot Written Exam before ever stepping foot in an airplane. Others will let you fly as much as youd like while you study at home for the test.Either way, the test must be completed before you can take the final private pilot check ride for your certificate. Its a quick 50-question test, and you must score a 70% or higher to pass. Its best to take it early on- flying is easier when you have the background knowledge. It just makes sense. Dont put it off. 05 Start Flying! A recreational pilot applicant will need at least 30 hours of flight hours, 15 of which need to be instructional flights and 3 hours of solo flight. Also, a recreational pilot trainee must achieve at least two hours of training to an airport at least 25 nautical miles from the home airport. Make sure you read the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) to learn more about the recreational pilot certificate. 06 Take the Checkride The final step toward obtaining a recreational pilot certificate is the FAA Practical Exam or the check ride. Once your instructor feels that youve demonstrated the required proficiency, he will sign you off for the check ride. The check ride is given by a designated FAA examiner, and it consists of a verbal exam and a flight exam. The exam usually lasts a few hours, depending on your level of knowledge and the examiners methods. You can see what youll be evaluated against in the FAAs Practical Test Standards.Upon successful completion of your FAA Practical Test, the examiner will assist you in filling out the FAA paperwork online. Youll have to pay him (rates vary- check with your instructor beforehand). The examiner will give you a temporary private pilot certificate to use while you wait for the official FAA certificate to arrive in the mail.
